The popularity of hemp-based products is steadily increasing throughout the years. The potential of this cannabis plant slowly increased our awareness of cannabinoids other than CBD. What is CBG oil, and how is it different from CBD?
What is CBG?
Cannabigerol (CBG) is one of a hundred cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Although highly unknown, CBG is the most important. All of the compounds found in hemp start with cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), the acid form of CBG. During the transition of the plant to the flowering stage, CBGa converts to three major cannabinoid precursors: CBDA(cannabidiolic acid), THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), and CBCA (cannabichromenic acid). What’s left of the CBGA left behind becomes CBG through decarboxylation.
What is CBG oil?
Just like CBD, CBG oil is made up of CBG extracted from cannabis strains. The only difference is, amounts of CBG are so hard to get by that you need large quantities of hemp biomass to get a scant few. Some scientists are looking at extracting CBG at a specific stage of the flowering cycle to get as much of the compound as possible.
Difference between CBG vs CBD
To understand the difference, let’s talk about their similarities first. First is they both came with cannabigerolic acid and act on the endocannabinoid system. The difference lies in how these compounds act on the receptors.
CBD interacts with CB1 and CB2 receptors in the body but indirectly. Experts are still unsure how exactly CBD works. However, it’s believed that the compound acts by stopping the breakdown of endocannabinoids. CBD also showed an ability to counteract the action of THC by altering the shape of the receptors.
CBG, on the other hand, binds to these receptors and has a straightforward pathway in activating them. It has a stronger affinity to CB2 receptors and, at higher doses, can stop other compounds from binding to CB1 receptors.
What does CBG do?
Aside from CBG’s action on the endocannabinoid system, it also strengthens anandamide’s function, a neurotransmitter responsible for regulating appetite and sleep, pain perception, pleasure, and motivation.
But isn’t that similar to THC? The difference with CBG is that it doesn’t give that psychoactive effect the same way THC does. There’s no change in your perception since CBG has a similar chemical action compared to THC.
What are the potential benefits of CBG?
CBG and CBD oil are closely linked together in counteracting the psychoactive effects of THC. When these two work together, they enhance the entourage effect of hemp products.
Just like with CBD, the full effects of CBG are still under research. However, scientists speculate that CBG may play a role in reducing stress, anxiety, and muscle tension.
Right now, researchers are still to uncover the full potential of CBG. As people start to consume more and more, CBG may soon show us what it’s really made of.
Will CBG make me high?
It’s important to note that even though CBG can bind to endocannabinoid receptors, the compound doesn’t get you high. It doesn’t have the psychoactive effects that THC does.
Can it make me fail a drug test?
Just like CBD, taking CBG won’t make you fail a drug test. On the other hand, if your CBG product contains THC, you will have that risk of failing a drug test. The test result will also depend on how sensitive the assay is to THC.
If you’re about to take a drug test, steer clear from full spectrum CBG oils. Read the label carefully and double-check that it doesn’t contain THC.
Is CBG legal?
Unlike CBD, CBG isn’t approved as a drug and untested. There are no rules regarding the use of CBG and CBG products, making it attractive to those who are looking for non-psychoactive products. It’s also legal on a federal level, provided that the CBG is found from legal hemp strains.
Cannabigerol is one of the cannabinoids that has potential benefits. The challenge here is that the levels of CBG found in cannabis plants are highly limited. Finding high-quality CBG content isn’t as easy as obtaining CBD oils, so the price is going to higher in comparison.
